A buyer's guide and general discussion of
Mechanical Keyboards

Keycaps
Keycaps are the primary source of the aesthetic of the board. They allow you to customize your keyboard and can be used to make any board look better. They also play a role in the acoustics of typing depending on the material and thickness.

With the diversity of profile and design it's difficult to make specific recommendations. I can offer these considerations however:
If you want to buy a nice key cap set, stick with Cherry or OEM profile if you have little experience with other profiles, they're also the most common profile. Try buying a cheap set of any profile you’re interested in trying out before investing in a nicer set.
Most high quality keycaps sets such as GMK, Infinikey, KAT, and Signature Plastics are largely sold in groupbuy format.
There are plenty of cheap, thick PBT keycaps with nice designs and good build quality through Amazon, Aliexpress, and Taobao. An affordable option for a first build or upgrade to a cheaper prebuilt. KDBfans is also a major keycap vendor.
